This was a critical fiasco when it came out in the early Sixties, and Hedren was widely blamed for the film’s failure. Most film critics now see it as one of Hitchcock’s greatest masterpieces from his late mature period, however–on a par with VERTIGO, PSYCHO, and THE BIRDS.

This is not a film for those new to Hitchcock or his themes: the lack of a typical mystery or suspense plot may seem surprising for those expecting Hitchcock’s more obvious bag of tricks. But as an in-depth character study of a truly unhappy woman and the (just as pathological) man who loves her, this one is every bit as riveting and fascinating and anything Hitchcock ever did–and when Marnie enters the Rutland mansion in her riding habit wielding a pistol after the foxhunting sequence you’ll be at the edge of your seat to see what she’ll do.

The linchpin of the film is Hedren, who gives what must be the most underrated performance in Hitchcock’s oeuvre–and clearly one of the very finest. Her refusal to warm up–either to Connery’s character or to audiences–has made it a difficult performance for many to grasp, but those who dismiss it are greatly mistaken. Her joy when Connery brings her beloved horse to the mansion, her faltering childlike tones during the film’s denouement, and her lightning-fast changes of mood during the great word-association secene show how truly talented and stunning this actress really is. You have only to see her incredible facial expression during the hunting scene when the hounds are ripping up the fox to shreds (and Marnie’s aristocratic friends are laughing at the spectacle) to appreciate what a complex talent Hedren is, and how thoroughly Hollywood wasted its opportunities to use her well.

“Marnie” is probably one of the best examples of Hitchcock’s work that epitomizes this great director’s style. Even if you didn’t know this was a Hitch film, if you know his style, by 5 minutes in you would recognize this as definitive Hitch. The attention that is paid to every tell-tale detail, the camera angles, the way he has of drawing you into every word of dialouge of a captivating story and always intriguing characters,… and the way only Hitch can make a kiss more provocative than any R rated film of today, will cast the Hitch spell on you once more.

“Marnie” is a psychological drama focusing on a deeply disturbed woman’s compulsive behavior. She’s a thief and a liar, and is getting away with it until she hit a road block in one Mark Rutland. Hired by Mark’s compay as a payroll clerk, we already see the wheels turning in Marnie’s unstable mind. Her plans to rob the Rutland vault go as planned, except for one hitch(excuse the pun), Mark is on to her and stops her dead in her tracks. He could easily turn her in, but Mark is attracted to this troubled woman, plans to delve into her psyche, and so what else could he do but marry her to keep her out of trouble.

Mark finds that Marnie’s troubles go very deep. Not only is she a thief, but has a horrible fear of being touched by a man, and he forms an obsession of his own. That of trying to cure his lovely but psychologically ill wife. As Marnie herself puts it to him…”You’ve got a pathological fix on a woman who is not only an admitted criminal, but who screams if you come near her!”…Yup, lots of work to be done here to unlock the sins of the past. And it’s done in only a way that Hitch can do it.

Tippi Hedren and Sean Connery are Marnie and Mark, and under the superb direction of the master, turn in impeccable performances. Diane Baker adds her talents as the meddling and suspicious sister-in-law, be sure to watch for Bruce Dern, and Bernard Herrmann’s score as always adds the perfect haunting touch to this twisted tale.

Looking for Hitch…early on(about 5 min in), looking mighty suspicious himself while exiting a hotel room.

Highly recommended for the Hitch fan.

Thanks and enjoy…….Laurie

I was beginning to wonder if James Bond was dead, but along comes Daniel Craig to breathe new life into the role, giving us a lean, mean 007 that blows previous Bonds away. Martin Campbell went back to the basics, retooling Bond and giving him a much more physical presence, reminiscent of Sean Connery. From the opening sequence we see we are in for a real treat, as Campbell takes nothing for granted. He knows he has to earn the audience’s respect, and he does with a thrilling chase scene in the chaotic urban center of an African republic.

Bond really comes across as a rogue agent in Casino Royale, stealing his way into M’s apartment to leave her coded messages, taking risks that threaten painstaking operations and getting himself into jams that require MI6 to bail him out. This is a young impetuous Bond, overanxious and thrilling to watch as Craig fills his role with the energy of a stage actor.

There is also one of the best villains in recent years with Mads Mikkelsen as the cold blooded Le Chiffre. He heads an international cartel not so much bent on world destruction as on taking advantage of the chaos in which we live. He is a much more believable villain than Spectre and relies on much simpler methods of getting his piece of flesh from someone.

It is also refreshing to see Bond have a real love interest in Eva Green, not the usual banter that rings hollow. Bond is not afraid to expose himself in this movie, revealing a much more vulnerable figure than we have seen before.

MI6 also finds itself as a much more porous organization, capable of being infiltrated so that Bond doesn’t know who to trust in key moments. All he has is the support of M, played to deadpan perfection by Judi Dench.

Everything about this movie is fresh and clean, including the opening credits. Bond hasn’t looked this good since the early films in the series with Sean Connery. There is even an amusing scene where Bond wins a 1964 Aston Martin in a poker game, a tip of the hat to Goldfinger.

I loved the first Blu-Ray edition. I have not seen the Collector’s Edition yet, but they have added so much more to this. I got this from the BluRay.com website….

In 1957, Paramount produced a very enjoyable musical comedy called “Funny Face”, directed by Stanley Donen, and to the music of George Gershwin, Adolph Deutsch, Roger Edens and Leonard Gershe. With a simple plot, the film begins in New York City within the offices of the major fashion magazine named “Quality”. Its president, Maggie Prescott (Kay Thompson), is determined to find a new way to promote the magazine. In a moment of inspiration, she comes up with the slogan “Think pink,” and breaks into song praising the color pink and saying that everything (from women’s clothing, soap, furniture, etc.) must be pink. Of course, she “wouldn’t be caught dead” in it.

Moving on to another magazine project, Maggie wants to find the perfect spot to photograph one of the magazine’s models named Marion (Dovima, who was a major fashion model in the 1950’s working closely with photographer Richard Avedon. This was her only film.). An assistant suggests that they go to a bookstore in Greenwich Village to create an intellectual atmosphere. Maggie, Marion, a host of Maggie’s staff all in pink and the magazines head photographer, Dick Avery (Fred Astaire), force their way into a dingy, but quiet, bookstore along with all of their equipment. A store employee, Jo Stockton (Audrey Hepburn) protests the uninvited intrusion vehemently, but the “Quality” magazine army locks her out of the store to work undisturbed. After several hours, the “Quality” mob vacates, but the books and store are left in a shambles for Jo to clean up. Dick offers his help to clean the store, but Jo refuses. After Dick leaves, Jo proceeds to sing another wonderful song in the film, “How Long Has This Been Going On?”

Maggie decides that “Quality” must find a real “Quality woman” to represent the magazine and it isn’t Marion. When Dick develops the photos taken at the bookstore, Jo is in one of them. He suggests to Maggie that Jo could be the woman that they need, but Maggie has her doubts. To lure Jo to the “Quality” offices, they order a large number of books and want them delivered. Jo arrives hours later with a pile of books and is accosted by Maggie’s staff who want to redress her in preparation for a photo shoot. Jo escapes and hides in Dick’s dark room. They talk and he sings to her another of the film’s title song, “Funny Face”. Jo completely disagrees with everything that “Quality” magazine represents; she believes in “empathicalism”, a philosophy that rejects all material things, as described by her idol, Professor Emile Flostre, who lives in Paris. When Jo is told that the “Quality woman” photo shoot and a fashion show will be done in Paris, she reluctantly agrees to be the model since it will give her the opportunity to meet Prof. Flostre.

The film continues in Paris where Jo models many clothes designed by Givenchy and a romance between her and Dick Avery develops. Jo finally gets the opportunity to meet Prof. Flostre (Michel Auclair), but will he meet Jo’s expectations? Will the romance between Jo and Dick survive the photo shoot and meeting Prof. Flostre? Does Maggie get to produce the Paris fashion show of your dreams? You’ll just have to watch this very entertaining film to find out!

The songs in the film include:

* “Think Pink” 5/5, Kay Thompson. A fast, snappy & whimsical song.
* “How Long Has This Been Going On?” 5/5, A blues song sung by Audrey Hepburn at the bookstore.
* “Funny Face” 5/5, Fred Astaire. A charming song.
* “Bonjour Paris” 5/5, Fred Astaire, Audrey Hepburn, Kay Thompson. A fun song filmed at various locations in Paris.
* “He Loves and She Loves” 4.5/5 Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astair. Filmed at Le Château de la Reine Blanche in Coye-la-Forêt with Audrey Hepburn modeling a wedding dress.
* “How To Be Lovely” 5/5, Kay Thompson and Audrey Hepburn. A fun & gutsy song.
* “Basal Metabolism” 4.5/5, A blues song that Audrey Hepburn dances to in a bistro.
* “Clap Yo’ Hands” 5/5, A fun, melodramatic blues song sung by Fred Astaire and Kay Thompson to sneak into the bistro. (a.k.a. “Ring-a Them Bells”)
* “Let’s Kiss and Make Up” 4.5/5 Fred Astaire. A love song sung again at Le Château de la Reine Blanche.
* “‘S Wonderful” 5/5, Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire. Another love song sung at Le Château de la Reine Blanche.

Some may think that “Funny Face” is nothing more than fluff, but it was produced to entertain with color, fashion, music, dance and comedy and it does so very well. The acting, singing and dancing from Audrey Hepburn, Fred Astaire and Kay Thompson is quite good and I rate “Funny Face” with 5 out of 5 stars. If you’re primarily interested in Oscar-winning dramas, “Funny Face” may disappoint you; but if you enjoy light-hearted musicals and like to laugh, then you’ll probably be very entertained with this fun film!

FUNNY FACE is one of the most enjoyable and delightful of Hollywood musicals. Featuring an immortal George & Ira Gershwin score (“He Loves and She Loves”, “S’Wonderful”, “Let’s Kiss and Make Up”, “How Long Has This Been Going On?”); the smartly-written screenplay by Leonard Gershe also marks this film with a strong storyline. I’ve yet to meet anyone who doesn’t like this movie.

When Quality Magazine invades a pokey Greenwich Village bookstore for a photo shoot, it’s the “dowdy intellectual shopgirl” Jo Stockton (Audrey Hepburn) who gets unwittingly discovered. Photographer Dick Avery (Fred Astaire) finds something special in this “funny face” and jets her off to Paris as the new model for Quality’s beauty campaign. Of course love comes knocking for Jo and Dick, but not before some marvelous songs have been sung, and showstopping dances have been performed.

Kay Thompson steals the entire movie as the deadpan magazine editor Maggie Prescott. She gets things off to a cracking start with “Think Pink”, traipses all over the streets of Paris with “Bonjour Paree”; and also gets a kooky 11 o’clock beatnik routine, “Clap Yo’ Hands” (with Astaire). The character of Prescott is a thinly-veiled caricature of noted fashion editor Diana Vreeland; whilst Astaire’s role is modelled after photographer Richard Avedon. Fans of “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” should keep an eye out for former brides’ Virginia Gibson and Ruta Lee, reunited here as two of Prescott’s assistants.

Audrey Hepburn’s early ballet and dance training came in handy with making FUNNY FACE, her “Basal Metabolism” routine is spectacular (and she sings quite well too). Filmed on location in Paris, the entire movie definitely has the proper European Travelogue feel to it.

This 50th Anniversary Edition of FUNNY FACE will feature a brand-new High Definition transfer of the movie, some great new featurettes (“The Fashion Designer & His Muse”, “Parisian Dreams”), plus the material from the previous DVD release (“Paramount in the ’50s” featurette, a photo gallery and the trailer).

The Andy Hardy series of the 1930s and 1940s will forever stand as the epitome of wholesome, thoroughly delectable family entertainment, and these astonishing films did great to effect Mickey Rooney a superstar and guaranteed money-making actor. Fancy Finds Andy Hardy, the fourth of sixteen films about Reflect Hardy’s family, is regarded by many fans to be the best of the bunch (although I take Andy Hardy Meets Debutante), due in no minute portion to the introduction of Betsy Booth, who comes from Fresh York to Carvel to exhaust Christmas with her grandparents. Judy Garland, a year before achieving superstardom in The Wizard of Oz, is simply adorable as Betsy, a cute and oh-so-talented young lady whom Andy dotes on as a child; even though her enormous crush on Andy never quite meets with reciprocating feelings on his share, she selflessly saves the day time and again for the antic-prone Andy. You have to be really gleaming to win into the kind of distress Andy gets in, she says, and boy oh boy is this the truth.

You can’t succor but worship Andy-Mickey Rooney is unashamedly goofy, unbelievably energetic yet fast to wallow in the messes of his bear making; he literally was the all-American boy of the post-Depression era. In this film, Andy wants a car, and he wants it before December 24 so that he can drive his sweetie Polly (Ann Rutherford) to the astronomical dance. Without telling his father (played by Lewis Stone), he gives the local car dealer twelve of the twenty dollars he needs for his chosen car, promising to pay the remaining eight dollars by the 24th. Herein lies the open of his problems. Andy is crushed when he learns Polly will be out of town for three weeks, yet opportunity seems to knock politely on his door when his friend Beezy promises to pay him eight dollars plus expenses to date up his bear girl while he is away. Thus does Andy launch a courtship of Cynthia Potter (Lana Turner) . Betsy Booth arrives next door with a preexisting crush on Andy, one which should be easily distinct even to the reckless-minded fellow, yet he never fails to relate her as a child. Frankly, Andy is something of a fool; there has never been a cuter young lady on this earth than Judy Garland during her teen years; if Betsy Booth would have grinned and done that itsy-bitsy nose wrinkle thing for me, I would have fallen at her feet. Anyway, and predictably, Andy’s plans all go astray. At one point, he is looking at the prospect of two dates to the dance and no car at all. With a friend like Betsy Booth, however, he need not have afraid about his precious social reputation being ruined.

Judy Garland absolutely steals the expose here. As I have said, she is not only cute as a button but gorgeous in every blueprint. Betsy fair wants to be seen as a young lady rather than a child, and her feelings on this converse are expressed perfectly in the song In Between (crafted by her musical mentor Roger Edens) . She does derive to be grown up and glamorous for one night, though, marking the occasion with unforgettable performances of the songs It Never Rains But What It Pours and Meet the Beat of My Heart (half of it, anyway, as the other half plus an additional number, Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen, were crop from the final print) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Love Finds Andy Hardy! Click Here

Judy Garland would return in two later Andy Hardy films, but more importantly, Worship Finds Andy Hardy served as the correct beginning of the Garland-Rooney phenomenon that wowed audiences over the course of the next few years. The two first appeared in the 1937 film Thoroughbreds Don’t Bellow, and the certain chemistry between the two spot the stage for her entry into the Andy Hardy films. Garland was never more loveable than she was in the role of Betsy Booth, and films such as Like Finds Andy Hardy have a very special position in the heart of this Judy Garland fanatic.

I agree with the reviewer from Canada: It would be enormous if Warner released the entire Andy Hardy series as a boxed station. I’ve had six of the films (on VHS) in my collection for quite a few years and never gain tired of watching them. Here’s another vote cast for more of Contemplate Hardy’s family on DVD!

Well I thought it was informative. But I also noticed some things that attempted to manipulated the viewers thoughts and opinions, like showing the nuclear plant’s exhaust while talking about carbon dioxide and fossil fuels. That exhaust is water vapor from cooling towers, not smoke plumes.

Same with the catasrophic weather and katrina. Yes it was a catasrophic storm, but a lot of the suffering in N.O. was partly to blame on gross negligence of the powers that be.

I did notice it had high production values. Which is also what annoyed me with the manipulative information. If you are going to invest that much time and money into a film why do you have to shape the truth? Can’t we ever get documentaries that are only moderately biased so that we can decide for ourselves? These films just fall on deaf ears to some and make others look like tin foil hat wearers. Integrity was compromised.

I still learned a lot however.

This is a spectacular piece of professional work and so compelling as to be inspirational.

I watched this with my wife with no lights, and decided to take no notes. Here are the highlights from my memory.

1) Brilliant, utterly brilliant, history, photography, personalities (such as the Indian guru that has photographed the source of the Ganges for 50 years) and sequencing. I don’t want to overdo it, but this may well be the single most important DVD of the century, and so worthy of both buying, showing to groups, and giving as a gift to others.

2) We are well on our way to 2-3 degrees rise, and if we do not begin to act sensibly now, toward six degrees. I absolutely loved the way this film developed, showing the changes one degree at a time. My wife had to point out the computer simulations, the producers and editors of this film are world class–they should share the Nobel with Herman Daly, Lester Brown, Paul Hawkin, and Anthony Lovin, Gore’s Nobel was an ill-advised politicized award, he is in the fourth grade compared to this film and the serious people it focused upon.

3) Oceans as the critical carbon absorbing element, and coral as the “canary in the coal mine” really grabbed me The overall screenplay, photography, voice overs, everything about this is spectacularly professional and rivieting.

4) Amazon as the next most critical element, with riveting views of the Amazon river drying up in 2005, and the potential scenarios of drought, fires, more drought.

5) Increasing destructiveness of weather. Katrina as the first of what could become every month storms, instead of 100 year storms. In passing, the film shows the world-class levies built by the Europeans, and they do not show the downright retarded cement levees of the US Army Corps of Engineers, levees that are the laughing stock of the rest of the (sophisticated) world.

A highlight of the film was its focus on the one man that has figured out the total carbon footprint of the cheeseburger, to include the methane farts of the cows. I am not making this up. This film is AMAZING, it is spectacular, it is professional, it is precisely the kind of well-crafted material that We the People need to begin self-governing rather than entrusting war criminals and and cronies (both parties) who sell us out.

The Crawling Eye (1958) had numerous monikers like The Creeping Eye, The Flying Eye, and even Creature from Another World, but started out as a British television serial titled The Trollenberg Terror (this is the title that appears in the beginning of this version of the film). Apparently the series was popular enough to warrant the making of film versions for European and American distribution. The film stars Forrest Tucker, who, while not an original member of the series, was brought in by the British studios in order to better promote the film in America. Original series actors that transferred from the television version to the film version were Janet Munro and Laurence Payne.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Crawling Eye! Click Here

The film starts off with three climbers on the side of a mountain, and one of the climbers suffers a serious case of death from the loss of his head (off-screen). The other two freak out and then we cut to three characters on a train, two being the Pilgrim sisters Sarah (Jennifer Jayne) and Anne (Janet Munro) while the third being Alan Brooks (Forrest Tucker). All three get off at the same stop, and make for a hotel near the base of the Swiss Alps. Brooks arrived at the request of a friend, Professor Crevett (Warren Mitchell), who works in a nearby observatory and has disturbing news. The two sisters, one with telepathic abilities (Munro’s character), are inexplicably drawn to the mountain. We soon learn that something is stealing mountain climber’s heads, leading some villagers to believe an abominable snowman with a guillotine is on the loose, aptly called `The De-Nogginizer’ (okay, no one said it, but I thought it). Brooks makes his way to the observatory and meets with his friend Professor Crevett. Crevett gives Brooks the ten cent tour, bragging on and on about his wonderfully amazing, technologically advanced and highly fortified observatory to which Brooks cuts it shorts and asks why he was dragged out here. Dr. Crevett shows Brooks a cloud on the mountain, and makes a reference to a shared past experience and believes there is a link to the cloud and the recent spate of deaths on the mountain. Turns out there is…

Not much point in going into the story too much more, spoiling the fun for everyone, but I will tell you this, there are more deaths by beheading, giant eyeball creatures, zombies, mysterious ice clouds, and some other cool surprises. As silly as all this sounds, the overall sense of the film is serious…even though the viewer will break out into laughter, especially at the special effects. The tentacled eyeball creatures various appearances just do not allow for the keeping of a straight face. I couldn’t help wonder if they had kept the mystique of the fog, revealing less about what was inside, if that would have made the film much more scary than it was…the tension was certainly there up until the point when the creatures were revealed, as the cloud hid its’ secrets well, prowling the mountain, signaling death was coming. Well, being the 50’s, you needed some fantastic creature, be it giant eyeballs, flying brains, or disembodied hands. If you didn’t, you were pretty much cheating the audience. I really enjoyed the number of elements involved in the story, and how nicely these things were tied together. That’s not to say everything works and there are no plot holes, but the film is tight, and any missing plot points are minor and not very detectable. This film is just all out 50′ sci-fi fun, much in the vein of another movie that came out in the same year, Fiend Without a Face. Cornball? Maybe, but certainly worth watching. Forrest Tucker is great taking time off from his usual westerner/action films to star here. He certainly doesn’t seem to fit the part in the beginning; at least to me, but as the film progresses, he makes it work, like pounding a square peg into a round hole. Janet Munro is attractive, and I had just recently saw her in The day the Earth Caught Fire (1961), but the real eye catcher was the actress who played the character of her sister, Sarah Pilgrim, Jennifer Jayne. Yowsa! Along with being an actress, I found out she is also a writer, and is responsible for (as Jay Fairbanks) the comedy/horror/musical Son of Dracula (1974) starring Harry Nilsson, Ringo Starr, and a slew of other musical talents.

Image and Wade Williams present a really nice looking wide screen print here. The picture is crisp and clear, and suffers little deterioration. Also, this is the European edition; hence the beginning credits stating The Trollenberg Terror as the title. A trailer is available on the disc, but it certainly suffered the ravages of time, looking very worn and damaged. There is also liner notes written by journalist, columnist, film historian, radio and television commentator David Del Valle, who is considered to be one of the leading authorities on the horror/science-fiction/cult and fantasy film genres. If you can find a better giant, killer eyeballs from space movie I’d like to see it.

Cookieman108

I saw this film as a child and it really scared me. It doesn’t scare me any more, but I still love it. It has a great script, excellent directing, and really cool monsters. The horror begins gradually with mountain climbers disappearing and later being found with their heads ripped off. Enter Forrest Tucker (star of many fims and the TV series F troop)as a U.N official dragged into the investigation of the “accidents.” Also starring in the film is the lovely Janet Munro as a psychic who can communicate with the aliens. The tension builds up as the cloud, where the monsters hide, gradually moves towards the local village. The first appearance of the giant, crawling monsters with one eye is superb. Although the limited special effects show in the climactic scene as the besieged humans fight back with Molotov cocktails, it is still first rate. Trivia note: following this film Janet Munro would do a series of Walt Disney flicks including Darbey O’Gill and the Little People (where she sings a duet with Sean Connery!), and Swiss Family Robinson. She would also star in the sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Caught Fire.

Solid fantasy anime is few and far between but that’s simply not the case in the video game world where fantasy titles have reigned supreme since the days of programming in Basic. Wisely, a few companies have taken note of this fact and rather than simply tool a new fantasy realm from the ground up, transfer an established video game title into the animated medium. Enter The Tower of Druaga from FUNimation.

Released across a pair of discs (thin packs within a cardboard outer slipcase), The Tower of Druaga Part 1 consists of episodes 1-12 and comes in at a total runtime of 280 minutes. It wears an appropriate TV 14 rating due to violence and light supernatural imagery.

Language options are standard sub & dub with both an English dub (Dolby 5.1 Digital Surround) and original Japanese soundtrack (stereo) & the choice of English subtitled if so inclined to turn them on.

Extras are nice and thorough and include A Tale Told Twice: An alternate look at the first episode, an English commentary track over the 5th episode, textless songs, a host of FUNimation trailers on the second disc.

The story goes something like this: Summer comes to a mystical land once every five years (called the Summer of Anu here), and it is during this time that monsters hidden away within the mysterious Tower of Druaga lose their powers thanks to the intercession of an idol appropriately named “Anu”.

Each Summer of Anu, the armies of the Uruk Kingdom secure their strongholds within the Tower, aiming to eventually conquer the upper floors in these periods where the demons’ powers are at their weakest. It’s been 60 years since the last human conquest of the tower (by a brave warrior King named Gilgamesh) and as far as huaminty is concerned, the creatures of the night wrecking havoc from within the tower are overdue for a whipping.

The story begins with the third Summer of Anu in the city of Meskia, which just so happens to be the human stronghold built on the first level of the massive Tower. The Uruk (human) Army is preparing for their campaign against Druaga; the enigmatic leader of the foul creatures occupying the levels above the stronghold. Getting in the way of warriors are freelance treasure hunters called “Climbers” who have traveled from distant lands to pursue rumors of a legendary treasure being guarded by Druaga called the Blue Crystal Rod.

We follow along with the adventures of a young warrior named Jil, who, despite a stout heart, is after the Blue Crystal Rod himself.

The plot structure is such that it focuses primarily on a few small groups of adventurers seeking to climb the Tower of Druaga and defeat the legendary Druaga once and for all (although it is explained several times that King Gilgamesh have him a spanking 60 years earlier but that seems not to have affected his ability to cause trouble). What this translates to for the viewer is a blend of action with a “race to the top” undertone working subliminally.

In truth it’s no surprise that the video game incarnation was so successful since the premise boils down to overcoming challenges and dispatching monsters on a floor-by-floor basis. Progression is fairly linear with the big bad guy waiting at the very top floor (with the treasure).

The mythology comes off as a sort of blend of old Norse material mixed with a bit of early Anglo legend (think Beowulf) with just a hint of Asian influence in the form of massive dragon-like baddies. In all it works very well.

The visuals are quite remarkable as well if not for their clean, crisp look throughout, for the fact that often times it looks like an animated screenshot directly from the early Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior games. Nobody does the fantasy protagonist quite as uniquely as the Japanese and this fact is reinforced here.

The direction is nearly flawless as would be expected from the same man responsible for Last Exile. Pacing, lighting, and individual shots are beautifully constructed and lend heavy-merit to the fantasy world itself.

Voice acting is stellar in both incarnations with my nod tipping very slightly toward the English dub on this one. Not to take anything away from the impeccable Japanese vocal track, my opinion is simply a testament to the quality dubbing FUNimation has been turning out of late.

In all this is a fantastic little fantasy series filled with stunning visuals, nice direction, and a plot solid enough to keep the episodes flying by. Best of all the prose doesn’t get bogged down or take itself too seriously by interjecting a dose of humor in moments that would otherwise be tension-ridden. Highly recommended.

Christmas With the Kranks, based on the very amusing novel called “Skipping Christmas,” by John Grisham is a hilarious and heartwarming film. It is surprising that the author of legal thrillers wrote such a humorous book.

Luther and Nora Krank (Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis) have always gone all out for Christmas, with a Christmas Eve party, custom-made cards and invitations from the local stationer’s, and of course a tree and dinner with Honey Roasted Hickory ham. But this year is different. Their twenty-three year old daughter Blair is off to spend a year in South America with the Peace Corps.

Rather than face Nora’s empty nest syndrome and depression, Luther books them on a cruise. All they have to do is skip Christmas. It sounds easy – and liberating – but the neighbors are aghast. Led by the powerful Vic Frohmeyer (Dan Ackroyd), the residents begin an all-out assault of Christmas spirit on their supposedly Grinch-like neighbors. One of the funniest scenes is when a battalion of carolers dressed in Victorian clothes descends on the house, and the measures Luther takes to keep them away.

A twist at the end is one of the most heartwarming Christmas scenes I have ever seen.

Good for the whole family.

Nice to find a movie that is “safe” to watch around kids. not a “kid” movie, really, but, it’s safe. Lighthearted, fun, a wee bit of slapstick humor.

Love Tim Allen, he was about the same guy that he is in all his movies. The father type that tries hard, but falls short, gets into a jam, and makes us laugh. Yup, that was him in this movie. but, he DID make me laugh. So, worth the price of a ticket. (or a dvd.)

Jamie Lee Curtis, can be annoying, but in this movie, she was sweet, a good complimentary wife to Tim. She is not as funny, but, did fine. She had some good lines too, actually.

The Daughter could have been played by any young 20 ish actress, she didn’t get much airtime. Pleasant and cute though, as was the boyfriend that she brought home. He was adorable, but had a very small part.

A neighbor kid was played by Erik Per Sullivanrik, the little brother, Dewey, off Malcolm. Cute funny kid. The Boy Scout leader / nosey neighbor was a HOOT and done perfectly by Dan Aykroyd.

Me and my dear Norman popped some popcorn and cuddled on the sofa to watch this DVD, and we enjoyed it a lot. Not deep, by any means. Just a nice holiday fun.

You should buy it. Maybe buy from the nice sellers on Amazon that sell used, but perfect condition DVDs (shhhh… save some money that way!) a free tip from your Grandma Sally! ho ho ho!!

carpet cleaning 1

Carpets increase beauty of the homes and to keep them cleaned is the main requirement. There are two methods of carpet cleaning -conventional and new technological methods Carpet Cleaning
chemical manufacturers set the five key cleaning procedures after twenty years of their research, especially dry-cleaning and Green based chemicals.

Commercially carpet cleaning is done through steam cleaning i.e. hot water extractionSecond process is dry cleaning which uses very low moisture and relies on the dry compounds supported by the application of cleaning solutions. This procedure is often swift and labor intensive as compared to wet extraction systems. The third method is Dry compound involving the use of the biodegradable powder and cleansing compound These compounds are spread all over the carpet and then swept or scrubbed over it.

For the not so big portions, a small household hand brush can be used to wipe out the filth and then it is vacuumed keeping carpet well cleaned and dry. The fourth method is Bonnet method involving club soda and cleaning product; both are combined with each other and scattered over the carpet and machine known as round buffer or bonnet is rotated over the mixture. This method takes more time in drying and is not recommended for deep cleansing.
People also make use of shampoos for cleansing of carpets.

This system was most popular till 1970 but it soon lost ground when Encapsulation system of carpet cleaning appeared. The process of Encapsulation is new technology for carpet cleaning that involves crystallizing soil particles into dry residues. It’s deep cleaning compound crystals soaks the dirt before clearing it from the carpet. For this procedure, rotary machines, bush applicator or compression sprayer are utilized for applying solution and then vacuum cleaner is utilized to clear dry residue. This process enhances the beauty of the carpet better.

There are many home made methods for Carpet Cleaning too like vacuuming, stain removing, making use of brushes, brooms etc to give your carpets a neat, clean and long life.
