I thought this Canadian movie was pretty well made. I love heist movies or films where they use really cool, high-tech ways of breaking into safes and other things… so this one was right up my alley. I can’t say I was disappointed. The movie starts out with a group of three people who, for fun only, plan how to break into places and safes … making their plans “foolproof” so that they are able to go off without a hitch (it’s just a game to them). They never carry out their plans though … until a set of their plans is stolen. Then a mob-like guy contacts them and makes them break into a safe for him. I don’t want to give too much away because it has good twists and turns in it. But if you are looking for an entertaining, exciting, funny, interesting movie, definitely give this one a try. Ryan Renolds is a great actor – he made the movie better just by being it. The supporting cast was pretty good as well. It wasn’t an award winning movie or anything, but for a night at home watching a decent movie… it’s perfect. Also, check out the extras on the DVD. As stated in the Trivia section on IMDB, an interesting tidbit: The movie was not only the widest release of a Canadian movie in history (as of October 2003), but had a record-breaking marketing budget of $2 million.

I had never heard of this Canadian film before, but had seen Ryan Reynolds in “Blade Trinity” recently as well as in “Van Wilder” and, having enjoyed his performances, quickly hunted down a few more of his lessor known films. And I am very glad I did because this film is a real hidden gem! If you enjoy heist/caper films, you will definitely enjoy this. It’s not prefect (in fact, it may be just a bit predictable to the most experienced film-watchers) but this is a very slick, beautifully produced, skillfully directed, smartly written movie and is still a lot of fun to watch. Great acting here as well. Reynolds again was terrific in the lead. He is fast becoming one of my favorite actors and is the man to watch in the future. David Suchet is awesome as well as the suave villain. Alternating nicely between suspense, comedy and even a few breathless action sequences, this film is one the most enjoyable surprises I’ve seen in a long time. Definitely a keeper. An important note to DVD buyers however: There are TWO versions/editions of this film available! One is a single-disc edition distributed by DEJ in the US (the one sold here on Amazon). It is in FULLSCREEN only and is lacking in some of the special features. The other edition is a 2-disc edition distributed in Canada by Alliance-Atlantis. This one is in WIDESCREEN, has more special features (a featurette on the special efffects for example) and has the second disc (a CD) consisting of the complete soundtrack music to the film. The cover art of this Canadian edition is different as well, showing Reynolds, Suchet and Kristen Booth standing in front of a glowing blue vault. Just some info I thought anyone should know if they are thinking about buying the film.

“The Rocker” is a surprisingly enjoyable movie, with engaging performances, jokes that are suited for the material, and a fairly solid premise. I was consistently interested in what was going on, and I actually cared about the characters. In a sense, it’s like a sports movie, in which we root for the heroes to fight the good fight and emerge victorious. I’m hard pressed to say it was any better than it wanted to be, however. Had this story been told dramatically, it probably would have been much more powerful; the rise to fame is not without its turmoil, especially when the celebrities are teenagers. The idea of an adult drummer leading a teenage rock band from the garage to the arena is full of emotionally charged possibilities. Many of them weren’t explored because “The Rocker” was made as a comedy. But that’s okay. It still works.

The story begins in 1986, just as a popular heavy metal band called Vesuvias finishes a gig in Cleveland. Despite their success, the drummer, Robert “Fish” Fishman (Rainn Wilson), is unceremoniously kicked out of the band. He swears that he’ll make it no matter what, but when we flash forward twenty years, it’s clear that things haven’t worked out as planned; Fish spends his days doing the tasks of a soul-crushing desk job. When he’s fired for unruly behavior (namely attacking a coworker for playing the new Vesuvias album), he’s forced to leave his apartment and move in with his disapproving sister, Lisa (Jane Lynch), her thrill-seeking husband, Stan (Jeff Garlin), and their quarrelsome children, Violet (Samantha Weinstein) and Matt (Josh Gad). Matt and his high school friends Amelia (Emma Stone) and Curtis (Teddy Geiger) have formed a rock band called A.D.D.; after weeks of trying, they will finally have their first gig at the prom.

But there’s a problem: the drummer was suspended from school and grounded by his mother. With little resources available, and with only one day to go until the gig, Matt asks Fish if he would be willing to once again pick up his drumsticks. Fish accepts, and when prom night arrives, everything goes smoothly. At least, it does at first; things go wrong when Fish ruins A.D.D.’s rendition of Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes.” When the smoke clears, everyone decides to give Fish another chance, but only if he can get them another gig. Then comes the night all four members practice with each other via webcams–Fish, not realizing the device on his laptop is a camera and not a microphone, sits completely naked at his drum set. “Hello, YouTube,” says Violet maliciously, watches everything on her computer.

Before anyone knows it, the video known as “The Naked Drummer” is an Internet sensation. It isn’t long before a scummy L.A. agent named David Marshall (Jason Sudeikis) enters with promises of fame and fortune. Thus begins A.D.D.’s Midwest tour, in which they open for other various bands. Hopefully, this will pave the way to more serious venues, maybe even their first solo gig. Of course, nothing like this can happen without some trouble along the way; Fish, hoping to loosen up the other members, encourages reckless behavior, like destroying hotel rooms and attending wild parties (by some miracle, the issue of alcohol never comes up). While all the parents recognize that Fish is a bad influence, Curtis’ mother, Kim (Christina Applegate), believes that the kids should follow their hearts. She volunteers to stay with the band for the rest of the tour to keep an eye on things.

At a certain point in the film, Fish is faced with a very tough decision. I won’t reveal what it is, but I will say it creates the first real rift between him and the rest of the band. The question is raised: Was Fish always meant for a life of rock and roll, or is he just a sloppy, irresponsible dreamer that refuses to grow up? One could ask the same thing about most music superstars, which is why it’s almost impossible to get an answer. Some are famous because they got lucky while other have actual talent. It seems that everyone in A.D.D. is talented enough: Fish certainly knows his way around a drum set; Amelia’s good with a guitar, and Matt can really work a synthesizer; Curtis is a natural songwriter, although one wonders if he’ll ever get past his abandonment issues. His father left him when he was only four, and he’s been brooding about it ever since.

If this movie is, in fact, giving us a message, then it’s probably the most obvious one we can think of: we have to do what we love and not let anyone stand in the way. We’re also told about sticking together no matter what, since a band is essentially like a family. In this case, it’s a family that doesn’t want to “grow up”; they want to eat, breathe, and sleep music without becoming corporate-run zombies that sit behind desks staring at computer screens. Fish suffered that fate for twenty years, making a living but not being alive. All he wanted was to have a good time, and he finds that passion once again helping his nephew’s band. The movie itself shares that same passion for fun, which is a nice change from some of the raunchier immature comedies released over the past couple of months (”Step Brothers” and “Drillbit Taylor” come to mind). “The Rocker” is funny without being excessive, and it actually tells us a story we can believe in. While it wasn’t made as a drama, there are moments that are a bit more thoughtful in their approach. The fact that the filmmakers knew when to let the humor simmer down tells me they took their work seriously.

“Dwight” from The Office fans should find enough Dwight in this film to satisfy. Those of you who can’t stand “Dwight” well, you may not find The Rocker experience a great one. The story is amusing enough. Twenty years previously, Fish (Wilson) is the drummer for the band Vesuvius. Good news for the band, a big label wants to sign them. Bad news for Fish, the president of the label has a drummer nephew who will be the band drummer. Fish never gets over this slight. As the band Vesuvius grows in popularity, Fish grows in bitterness. After losing his job, girlfriend and apartment he moves into his sister’s attic. His nephew has a garage band with a gig at the prom. They lose their drummer and, well, you can figure it out from here.

Surprisingly clean, there are no sex scenes, the language is tolerable and low-key. However, there is a scene with an angry mother who shares the fact that her son drew a male body part on a female teacher’s face….which is a very funny scene, but contains the anatomically correct word several times. There is also a band manager who is very free with come-on’s and has a sexually oriented potty mouth. A scene of Fish drumming naked becomes the YouTube hit — The Naked Drummer — and propels the band to popularity. Viewers are treated to a whole lot of naked man rear shots.

The humor level is moderate. Like I said, you probably need to be amused by Dwight to fully appreciate Fish’s humor. He has a very unique delivery, sweet blended with doofusy sarcasm/nastiness. There are several amusing one-liners and situations that are laugh out loud including quite a bit of physical humor. Christina Applegate delivers some great sarcastic lines. The writing is good. The songs are easy to listen to and I really liked their sound. Solid friendship, do-the-right thing and forgiveness themes run through the film. Fish is a classic 80’s rocker who likes the party scene, including the trashing of hotel rooms. The three younger band members are annoyed with his boorish behavior and that’s a nice refreshing change from the usual teen movie.

At a time when interracial marriage was calm making many Americans anxious, this sitcom helped to diffuse that real-life tension through a suburban fantasy. This note thus focuses less on the supernatural and more on issues of family, community, and idenity.

Thirty six episodes get up this 1964-1965 season. A 1963-filmed pilot episode is included in this season for superior measure.

Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) is a witch who fell in treasure with and then married the mortal Darrin Stephens (who, for the first couple of seasons, is played by Dick York) . Darrin accepts her `heritage’ only on the condition that she now refrain from using witchcraft and `settle down’ to be a normal American middle-class housewife.

To the dread of her mother Endora (Agnes Moorehead), Samantha has agreed to the inquire of. But, Endora ultimately insecure over nothing. Samantha herself soon discovers that giving up witchcraft was an impossible promise. Conflict between her promise and an often-more complicated reality drive this series’ storylines.

Tensions immediately flare in the first season when an former flame of Darrin’s (Nancy Kovak) invites them to a dinner party. Because Shelia Sommers is so foul, Samantha breaks her promise in order to avoid being shown up in front of her husband. Beginning with this episode, Darrin recognizes that he cannot control when Samantha does/does not exercise her magic, and can only fabricate suggestions. Whether this advice is taken then rests entirely with Samantha.

In “Be it ever so mortgaged” we meet Gladys and Abner Kravitz (Alice Pearce and George Tobias) who are the Steven’s next door neighbors. Ever the busybody, Mrs. Kravitz begins a series-long tirade about `something strange going on over there’. Less concerned, her husband is a largely-silent type.

“It shouldn’t happen to a dog” introduces us to Darrin’s boss Larry Tate (David White) and his wife Louise (at this point being played by Irene Vernon) . It also previews the many problems Darrin will have working at the McMahon & Tate advertising company.

“The witches are out” finds Samantha protesting the negative pop culture images of witches traditionally associated with American Halloweens. With the succor of her beloved Aunt Clara (Marion Lorne) Samantha convinces an advertising client of Darrin’s that using a fair witch for their candy sales would be a better strategy through changing that executive’s appearance: If he did not like being an unpleasant witch, neither did they! Aunt Clara has the distinction of being Samantha’s only female relative who genuinely appears to like Darrin

Samantha meets her in-laws, Phyllis (Mabel Albertson) and Frank Stephens (Robert F. Simon) during “Samantha meets the folks”. Aunt Clara’s unexpected return and helping out upsets Darrin who had wanted his parents to acquire that Samantha did all the housework by herself. Because she had wanted to score some fault with this housework (regardless of who actually did it), Phyllis was honestly disappointed by how perfect everything looked. Darrin’s mother is later relieved to learn that her daughter in law is not actually a suited housekeeper, and Darrin then makes up with Aunt Clara.

Aunt Clara makes another gigantic appearance in “There’s no witch like an extinct witch”. Aunt Clara is a big babysitter until she accidentally tells the kids that she is a witch. Because witches supposedly do not exist, she is barred from babysitting. Although a contemplate (who had every reason to doubt her statement of being a witch) is instead impressed with Aunt Clara, the Stephens determine to send her to Miami for a convenient obtain away vacation with her friends. This will provide time for people to forget what they were told in this episode.

Forty years later, these episodes maintain up big. Some sitcoms which cannot age well obviously depend on extras in the DVD sets in order to net market appeal with `today’s audience’. Bewitched is one of the rare titles which has always remained watch-able and really does not need the special features included in this release.

Even the ‘black and white’ filming of this season is not annoying. Bewitched was head and shoulders above many other sitcoms of the era to start with.

The notice for this product is really affordable considering the production quality AND all of the DVD extras. Strange DVD featurettes include bloopers, a feature how the ‘magic’ was performed, and a theatrical trailer for the upcoming Bewitched movie with Nicole Kidman.

I am only saddened that Montgomery and both `Darrins’ are no longer around to participate in the DVD release for this series.

Maybe I’m stuck in the past, but I don’t judge that (most) unique TV programs can compare to the tremendous writing and acting from the older shows. Bewitched is one of those shows from my childhood that serene shines brighter than anything current on the air today. Unless you subscribe to one of those specialty TV stations that replay the oldies, this DVD site is a must!

Peter O’Toole and Petula Clark shine in this vastly underrated 1969 musical adaptation of James Hilton’s classic novel. Beautifully directed by Herbert Ross, this film deserves to be restored to its 70MM / 6 track stereophonic glory and released in theaters and on widescreen DVD.

This is a heart-warming film for the entire family. Some would argue the acting isn’t great, O’Toole can’t sing and Robert Donat was better in the 1939 original. They miss the point. This film has a soul. It has grace, charm, warmth, music and is in a class of its own. I didn’t expect to like this film and its songs — but I do. Leslie Bricusse and John Williams won the Oscar for Best Music, Score of a Musical Picture (Original or Adaptation) and picked up the Golden Globe as well. O’Toole was nominated for, but did not win, the Oscar that year. However he did win the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Actor – Musical/Comedy and the NBR Best Actor Award for this film. And Petula Clark sings beautifully!

Please, whoever holds the film rights (MGM or Warner), give us O’Toole and Clark in this wonderful, heart-warming film, both on DVD and CD. Delightful film. Highly recommended!

January 27, 2009 UPDATE:

See: ASIN: B00005JO3W. The restored film was released on DVD in its original widescreen format and 5.1 surround sound. Yes!

“Goodbye, Mr. Chips” was a huge surprise to me when I first saw it in 1969. I had read the reviews (but most critics panned musicals no matter how much they really enjoyed them). I hadn’t read anything that credited the tremendous quality lavished on every component of the film. Peter O’Toole, whose performance was singled out by most critics, is startlingly wonderful as the shy, yet intensely interesting Mr. Chippings. Petula Clark is totally luminous as Katherine. It was a wonderful follow-up role to her stunning debut in “Finian’s Rainbow”. We are most unfortunate that we never got more of her musical talents on film.

The music is stunning. You just don’t hear music arranged/orchestrated like this any more. Most of the lyrics are simplistic, and often quite funny, but I think they all are endearing and enduring. I have friends who love this film as much as I. Whenever one of us is ready for another look (via the widescreen MGM laserdisc…not YET available on DVD, drat it!) we usually let the others know by quoting the lyrics to “London is London” (can there be any doubt about it?).

This film stands up much better than most film musicals of the era. For sheer entertainment value and an emotional wallop, it’s nearly in a class by itself. O’Toole’s then-wife, Sian Phillips, has one of the most delicious turns in film musical history as a man-mad (and man-eating) vamp.

Anyone who loves musicals will find this among the best they’ve ever seen.

John Williams adapted and conducted the score. Songs were written by Leslie Bricusse. Williams’ adaptation efforts were to take Bricusse’s songs and create an underscore that seamlessly blended with the songs and action on the film. He accomplished this with a brilliance we have since become accustomed to. For his magnificent efforts, Williams was nominated for the 1969 Best Scoring (adaptation) Oscar but did NOT win (Lennie Hayton and Lionel Newman won for “Hello, Dolly!”

My son loves Sesame Street and has since he was a year old. He’s not Elmo-crazed but he does love Elmo along with Cookie Monster (his favorite), Ernie, the Count and Baby Bear. I was trying to stay away from Elmo says BOO! because I bought him Elmo Saves Christmas last year and he won’t watch it all the way through (I think it’s too much elmo and not enough of the other guys) wich is why I picked this Halloween DVD. It’s got more characters in it. This DVD is basically about the rituals of Halloween and what people do on the holiday for example it’s got a trip to an apple cider factory to show how they make apple cider.

The movie’s educational and I, personally, like it but I think it’s more for a 4+ child, not toddlers. If your child is 4yrs or older then I think it’ll be an excellent choice.

We’ve got It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie brown wich he loves & The Nightmare Before Christmas (or what he calls “JACK”) wich he loves but I wouldn’t recommend for toddlers. I guess we’ll try Elmo says BOO! Wish us luck and Happy Halloween! :)

Our daughter, who just turned two in August, absolutely loves Sesame Street. When we bought her this movie we hoped it would keep her as involved and interested as the TV show and it has far exceeded our hopes. She has watched it over and over since the beginning of October, (along with her 9 year-old sister and 10 year-old brother if you can believe that!) and she now not only sings some of the silly songs, but says some of the lines with the characters, too!

It is very informative and yet it keeps her attention. Every time she sees the part about the apples and the cider mill, she asks for an apple to eat!

I am now in the hunt for the perfect Sesame Street holiday show, (maybe Elmo’s World Happy Holidays?), so that the Halloween shows can be hidden away until next year.

Joe Hardy is a fanatic, middle-aged Washington Senators baseball fan who makes a pact with the devil. In exchange for his soul (although there is a puny run clause) . he’ll become a 22-year-old savior of the Senators, the greatest long ball hitter in history, and he’ll lead the team to a pennant. Later, young Hardy shows signs of yearning for the wife he left leisurely, so the Devil sends in Lola, his vamp supreme. But thanks to Joe’s integrity, the dash clause, and after a number of song and dance numbers, things are effect honest for both Joe and the Senators.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Damn Yankees! Click Here

The movie is an almost true replica of the 1956 Broadway hit. Tab Hunter moved in as the young Joe, but everyone else reprised their stage roles — and that’s the reason to peek or purchase the DVD. Ray Walston plays Applegate, the devil, with barely contained glee. He’s sly, unethical, untrustworthy and very amusing. Best of all Gwen Verdon plays Lola, and she hits a home hurry with every number. She was a mountainous dancer and a magnetic stage presence. I saw her do her stuff on stage once and it’s a grand memory. She had her gigantic crash in Can Can in 1954, then starred in three more shows during the Fifties. She won a Tony for each. She married Bob Fosse, retired, had a daughter, divorced Fosse. In 1966 she starred in Sweet Charity. And at 50, in 1975, she starred in Chicago. Contain me, she hadn’t lost a thing. She was not the starlet type. She had a grainy, slightly smoky swear, and a personality that could range from gamin to raunchy. She could bring innocence to the most suggestive lyrics. As you can dispute, I’m a fan.

The rep for Damn Yankees is, in my thought, better than average but not a classic. It includes “Whatever Lola Wants,” “Two Lost Souls” and “Heart.” Fosse did the choreography and dances with Verdon in one number, “Who’s Got the Harm.” It’s a clever, speedily routine and is a mountainous showcase for them both.

When Warners brought Adler and Ross’s “Pajama Game” and “Damn Yankees” to the conceal, they get a wise choice: they brought most of the shows’ modern Broadway casts with them, substituting objective two photogenic major studio contract players (Doris Day for Janis Paige in “Game” and Tab Hunter for Stephen Douglass in “Yankees”) in leading roles. In Day’s case it was probably an improvement; Hunter’s not titanic but he’s no embarrassment. Stanley Donen (on loan from MGM? ) teamed up with the sizable stage director George Abbott for the films, and (thankfully!) Bob Fosse restaged his unique dance numbers. Naturally there had to be some cuts – risque material (”The Game” in “Yankees”, “Assume of the Time I Attach” in “Pajama”) was excised – and the shows were tightened. But the spirits of the unusual shows were better captured than in most Hollywood transfers. The modern DVD of “Yankees” arrived today and it’s regrettable that there are no bonuses and there’s no stereo track (unlike MGM and Fox, Warners apparently didn’t occupy worthy in multichannel recording at the time) . But the exhibit, though a dinky dated, is smooth huge fun. Anyone who knows Ray Walston merely from “My Popular Martian” is due for a special treat. Vernon, whose Hollywood career during her musical prime was far too brief, is ALWAYS a treat, and Lola was one of her signature roles. The Warnercolor transfer looks handsome fine for a film nearly 50 years conventional. I remember Warnercolor veering a slight to the unlit side of the color palette but that seems to have been compensated for here.

Carpets enhance beauty of the homes and to keep them cleaned is the main requisite. Carpet Cleaning can be done by both the conventional as well new technological advanced methods Carpet Cleaning
chemical manufacturers set the five key cleaning procedures after twenty years of their research, especially dry-cleaning and Green based chemicals.

The commercial processes of carpet cleaning involve steam cleaning i.e. Hot Water extraction involving the utilization of detergent based solutionsSecond procedure is dry cleaning which uses very low moisture and relies on the dry compounds supported by the application of cleaning solutions. This process is often very fast and labor intensive as compared to wet extraction systems. The third process is Dry compound making the use of the biodegradable powder and cleansing compound These compounds are spread all over the carpet and then brushed or scrubbed over it.

For the small portions, a small household hand brush can be used to wipe out the filth and then it is vacuumed keeping carpet well cleaned and dry. The fourth process is Bonnet method involving club soda and cleaning product; both are combined with each other and scattered over the carpet and small machine known as round buffer or bonnet is moved over the mixture into rotating motion. This process involves more time in drying and is not advised for deep cleaning.
People also make use of shampoos for cleaning of carpets.

This process was most popular till 1970 but it soon lost its position when Encapsulation system of carpet cleaning appeared. The method of Encapsulation is latest technology for carpet cleaning which involves forming crystals of soil particles into dry residues. It’s deep cleaning compound crystals soaks the dirt before removing it from the carpet. For this process, rotary machines, bush applicator or compression sprayer are utilized for application of solution and then vacuum cleaner is utilized to clear dry residue. This process increases the beauty of the carpet better.

There are many home made procedures for Carpet Cleaning too like vacuuming, stain removing, making use of brushes, brooms etc to provide your carpets a neat, clean and long life.

Lee Strobel has done the Christian community-and indeed, the world, a service with this DVD. I was extremely impressed with both the explain and the production values. The video is a gargantuan introduction to Christian apologetics both for the ordinary “man or woman in the pew” and the “ordinary skeptic.”

To claims that the film is biased, of course it is. It’s an apologetic documentary after all. But it is nevertheless a fairly balanced overview, or summary, of the evidence for the truth claims of the NT. This documentary isn’t any more biased than the TV documentaries that usually air on the cable channels (A&E, THC, DSV, TLC, etc.) at Christmas and Easter which are typically aimed at a celebrated audience and biased against the truth claims of the NT and which usually cater to the sensational and bizarre. Strobel’s DVD should succor as a nice counterpoint to all the current sensationalist documentaries out there. Upright, the film doesn’t secure too technical, however perhaps it really doesn’t need to? Anyone keen in delving deeper can check out the books listed in the bibliography, many of them written by the very scholars interviewed in the film.

Also moving are the special features video interviews with many of the scholars interviewed in the film giving personal testimonials about how their work as scholars has increased their faith.

It does not suffer from the quality of most subculture Christian DVDs; however, this DVD is more about Lee’s conversion yarn than it is an in-depth examination of the evidence. While I understand the need to provide a lickety-split “reasons to hold” for the general public, it would have been nice if this DVD had a exact strong 2-3 hour featurette examining the evidence allotment by share.

As a conversion legend, this DVD works well enough. Both Lee and his wife are featured and many different scholars appear for hasty explanations on determined topics that deal with the resurrection and reliability of the Gospels, etc. There are philosophers William Lane Craig and J.P. Moreland as well as recognized N.T scholars Craig Blomberg and world famed N.T. Wright who invent appearances arguing or providing evidence on definite subjects. All in all, this is a kindly DVD for speedily information about clear topics regarding Christianity, but by not delving deeper into the material, it could have the rather opposite intent by insulting either Christians who are looking for a resource to back them “provide an retort” or to those seeking for answers.
