This is a mammoth character film expanding the lives of four young girls from the proper dilapidated 70’s decade and stirring up a lot of musty memories.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Now and Then! Click Here

The film starts with the adult versions of the four girls played by Rosie O’Donnell, Melanie Griffith, Demi Moore and Rita Wilson as they near together for a reunion for the birth of Wilson’s child. Not distinguished has changed! O’Donnell has become a doctor, Griffith a movie star, Moore a writer and Wilson a pink and perky mother to be. This film allows us all to peep how these women came to be and it is actually glorious insightful. So sit wait on and grasp yourself on an “former school” gallop wait on in time.

Soon enough this movie goes support in time to the early 70’s when kids could stagger bikes all over town, ice cream sodas were the rage, AM radios hung on every handlebar, laughter hung in the air and stories were meant to be told. The young O’Donnell is played by Christina Ricci, a tough tomboy growing up in a family of men because her mother was killed. Ricci is the strong one, the shoulder to yell on, the fighter who would rather play sports than sprout a couple of breasts. Griffith is portrayed as a young girl by Thora Birch and as a youth is fascinated early by sex, fallacious breasts and being an actress. Birch is the adventurer, the wandering heart and the heartbreaker of the group. Moore’s child is played by Gaby Hoffman and she is the unexcited, introspective and questioning young girl. Hoffman gets herself in all sorts of dilemmas stemming from the shame of divorced parents who act more like children than she does. Finally Wilson is played by Ashleigh Aston Moore, and of all the girls she remains steadfastly the same in adulthood as in youth, a simple, rather innocent girl surrounded by a perfectionist mother (played by Bonnie Hunt!) and an entire room of pink and lacy curtains.

The young girls are shown growing up and bold the world, finding where they all belong and how they are alike yet very different. The film brings wait on tall memories of the time through the spend of colossal music and ties to positive events that impacted the generation. The happiness and innocence of the decade is found on the country roads and soda shops as the girls view their adventures. Comic crushes and fights with boys are inevitable along with all the challenges of growing up foul. All of the fun of childhood is represented here, the cemetery séances, tree-house meetings, excursions on bicycles, splashes in the river, sneaking out the bedroom window at night and childhood friendships that should last a lifetime. I found this film captivating and insightful, but then I came from the same generation so I can totally report. So I leer it every now and then for the sweetness and the memories of a colossal childhood.

“Now and Then” is a very spacious depiction of growing up..
And it features the early days of 2 of now our greatest and most sexiest actresses Thora Birch (here she is a blonde) and my common Christina Ricci..They shine as does the other 2 girls in this more then fabulous movie..The movie features a incredible 1970s Classic Rock soundtrack..It covers all areas of what 70s Classic Rock was..Take up the cd soundtrack while you are at it along with this dvd..The only downside on this dvd is there is SADLY No Slack The Scenes..I wish they would have late the scenes and bloopers of this movie would have been astronomical..
And even better would be a reunion of the cast..Coz i am wondering what ever became of the other 2 actresses in this movie with Ricci & Birch..And this too i consider they could have casted the “older” versions of the girls better then they did..Rosie O Donnell as the older Christina Ricci in Rosie’s dreams..The only one of the “older” versions that is really believable that can really portray is Melanie Griffith as the “older” Thora Birth..But they are not in this movie long thankfully..They are only in originate and ruin with maybe a total time of 5 minutes or a tad more..Not enough to kill this gargantuan movie..The movie focuses thankfully more on Ricci / Birch and the girls..Other then what i objective mentioned this is one of the greatest films you will ever gaze..And if you had been between ages 5 and teen years in the 1970s it will bring benefit loads of memories..Everything from the opening scene of the girls playing “red rover red rover let (effect your name here) advance over” to the music to the looks and objective things did as a kid and teen in those days..It is reinacted sooooo well that you can’t even squawk this is a 1995 movie..The sets the feeling is total 70s..It is recreated magnificentally..I am 38 this year *2004* and it brought relieve many memories for me..Christina Ricci here reminds me sooooo noteworthy of My Beloved Mandy when we first met fair down to a priceless basketball scene..So this movie has sentimental value to me..Inspect this movie maybe it will touch you in that blueprint too..But either scheme i can guarentee that it will bring attend memories..It will be a fun filled viewing exsperiance..A kind of a early teen girl version of Stand By Me..Delightful Fun and Astonishing filmed movie adds up fun for all no matter when your generation is.NOT TO BE MISSED
Gets better with every single time you study it..A must for any fan of the one and only Christina Ricci..If you are a fan of Christina Ricci and you don’t have this movie win this movie to explain you are her fan..Christina Ricci Rules……

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this movie when I first viewed it. I ended up being pleasantly surprised. It’s certainly watchable and a fun period piece. Sixties fans will get a kick out of seeing scenes of Sonny and Cher going around town and the brief concert footage that is shown at the beginning of the film.

The plot concerns Sonny accepting an offer to make a film but Cher doesn’t feel it’s the right thing to do. Sonny images them in a Western, a Jungle picture (watch for Micky Dolenz from the Monkees in a quick cameo!), and a detective drama. The duo find the time to sing a couple of songs, including an accoustic version of “I Got You Babe”.

Cher has almost as many wardrobe changes during this film as Natalie Portman does in the Star Wars films. The director (William Friedkin) seems to have some sort of weird obsession about the scene where Cher is dressed as a (kind of creepy) clown. It’s shown TWICE in flashback form. It also appears that character actor Paul Frees did a lot of (uncredited) voice overs for this film. If you like Paul Frees, you’ll get to hear a lot of him in this movie.

The DVD contains a fairly clean print and it is presented in widesceen format. The color booklet contains a short plot summary and lists the chapters. Anchor Bay released this with no extras. A trailer, bios, and photo gallery would have been a nice plus. Captions would have been appreciated too. It’s too bad that Sonny is gone because I think he could’ve recorded an interesting audio commentary track for this film.

If you or someone you know enjoys music and films from the sixties, by all means check this out.

This is such a colorful, whimsical video that it shows the beginning of the struggles & climbs and the raw talent & determination both Sonny & Cher had early on. It has various skits meshed into a movie that highlights both singing and Cher solo too, shows personalities & love toward eachother, clothing styles outasite, segments actually shot in their first home amid the fanciful 60’s, at a time when producers really tried to do things their way.Segments include Sonny as bumbling sheriff, spy & Tarzan-type, carousel scene & show S & C as independent innovates, who vow to continue to value love over any dumb movie.

The Mirage of Blaze OVA is more intense, better animated and has better storytelling than the TV Series.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mirage of Blaze: Rebels of the River Edge! Click Here

I do have to say that the storytelling in the OVA does a lot more than the TV series to lessen the confusion of us English viewers who are without the original novels or manga to work from. However, if you haven’t seen the TV series you may be a bit confused anyway about what is going on. They don’t go into very much detail about the backstory of the characters, what happened between them 400 years ago, or even really what happened in the TV series (particularly between Naoe and Takaya). The only thing they really include from the TV series is the final words between Takaya and Naoe at the very end of episode 13.

The focus of the OVA is threefold:

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mirage of Blaze: Rebels of the River Edge! Click Here

First, there is the new Feudal Underworld threat, centering around this man, Araki, who bears a striking resemblace to Ayako’s lover from 200 years previously. He is under attack from one of the warring clans, who wish to use him as a sacrifice in order to obtain a powerful weapon from a sacred relic. Episode one centers around setting up this story (whereas episode two is Naoe/Takaya heavy, and episode three Ayako dominant).

Second, Ayako. Ayako features dominantly in the OVA. In fact, she practically takes over the third episode with her backstory about this former lover of hers. The most human and sympathetic moments in the OVA center around her. While Takaya and Naoe are off being crazy and mean to each other and everyone around them, Ayako is not only the voice of reason, but of humanity. You’re really going to like her in this one.

And third, the continuing battle between Naoe and Takaya for dominance, respect and love. Takaya is particularly cruel to Naoe in this series, and Naoe for his part, is even more crazy than he was in the TV series. It is almost mindblowing how hard they are both fighting for dominance. Takaya’s last words to Naoe at the end of episode 3 about what Naoe has to do to “have” him are striking, and leave the door open to not only another series, but also limitless potential among fan circles for inspired fiction.

This DVD is definitely NOT recommended for anyone under at least the age of 16, even though the DVD is rated 13+. Consider that uncomfortable scene between Takaya and Naoe in episode 7 of the TV series and magnify it by ten in the second episode of the OVA. “Unflinching,” “intense” or even “tactless” are good words to use to describe what happens. If the homosexual overtones (or for that matter, rape) of the series made you uncomfortable, I suggest passing on the OVA. However, pay close attention to the flashback (if you can avoid averting your eyes, it’s pretty intense in itself) that Takaya has during this scene. It reveals at least part of the reason for his reluctance to accept Naoe’s affections. It is truely insightful for us viewers to work with who only had sketchy details about what happened between the two 400 years ago when they were on opposing sides, and even less about them individually. The whole thing about what Naoe did to Takaya and this woman that he loved (or something) at the time is sidestepped in the OVA, perhaps unfortunately, since I at least needed some clarification.

As for all the other characters from the TV series there is no mention of Takeda, Ranmaru, the Fuuma ninjas or any of our other favorite badguys. Furthermore, Yuzuru and Chiaka have very small cameos at the beggining of the first episode, and then we practically don’t see them at all afterwards. So, any Yuzuru and Chiaki fans may be disappointed.

The DVD includes textless opening, closing, and three separate interviews with the Japanese voice actors who played Takaya, Naoe and Ayako that were presumably originally released with each episode of the OVA in Japan. The DVD also comes with a bonus animeworks catalogue with some sneak peeks at episode 1 of Samurai Deeper Kyo and Twelve Kingdoms.

We can only hope for more localized Mirage of Blaze in the future. Whether that be more series, or yaoi manga translations or even dare we hope, the original novels…

Firstly, I’d like to point out that I have been waiting for this DVD ever since I found out that it was in production. I have been a long time fanatic of the Mirage of Blaze (Honoo no Mirage), and I was rather disappointed with the abrupt ending of the first series, Mirage of Blaze TV.

Thankfully, this new OVA picks up right where the last episode left off.

I was immediately struck by how different the characters seemed. This series digs a lot deeper into the real reasons behind everyone’s involvement in the Feudal Underworld, especially that of Haruie.

But to be perfectly honest, the real driving point of the story, at least for myself, is the constant battling and overall angst of Takaya and Naoe. Naoe, in particular, seems much different than he was in the TV series. He begins to fight back, in his own way, against Takaya’s consistent inability to make a decision regarding his feelings towards Naoe.

This is the part where I tell you that if you’re into this series for the yaoi, this is where the getting gets good. The insinuating overtones are a thing of the past, and as soon as you watch the second episode on the DVD, Tiger’s Eye, you’ll see exactly what I mean. This DVD, by the way, is rated 13+. I am almost certain that it is a mistake. Yes, it is that good. It’s no Boku no Sexual Harrassment, but it certainly brightened up my day, week…year, rather.

I’ve only just received the DVD today, and I’m already in feverish anticipation for the next offering, here’s hoping that it won’t be another two years. Even so, I’ll still be waiting.

I’ve been waiting for this DVD to come into print for years, and now the wait is finally over. Thanks to Lionsgate for finally stepping up, straightening out the rights issues, and putting together a nice 2-Disc special edition of this classic 80s kids flick.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Monster Squad! Click Here

The Monster Squad, much like the Goonies and the Lost Boys, is a kid’s flick at heart, but it doesn’t come off as if it were written and directed down to children. The flick stars Andre Gower, Ryan Lambert (of Kids Incorporated fame), Brent Chalem, Michael Faustino and Robby Kiger as a group of kids that have a secret Monster club where they pontificate on all things monster related. Quick, two ways to kill a werewolf? Stumped? That’s right, everyone knows you need to shoot `em with a silver bullet. Anyway, the group runs into trouble when unbeknown to them the all too real rouges gallery of the classic Universal monster movies are converging on their town looking to destroy an amulet that can prevent them from taking over the world. Sean, the leader of the club, lucks into a copy of Van Helsing’s diary, which provides the instructions to a ritual that will banish the monsters into limbo. With the help of “Scary German Guy” (played by the always excellent Leonardo Cimino) a concentration camp survivor and resident German diary translator, the group bands together to save their families, their town, and quite possibly the entire world.

The film was directed by Fred Dekker and co-written by Fred Dekker and Shane Black (of Lethal Weapon and Predator fame) with amazing special effects and make-up by the legendary Stan Winston. This DVD was made possible by the director, actors, and fans who banded together in the past year through letter writing campaigns and revival screenings which proves just how much of a cult classic this flick is. If you are a generation X’er who’s into action, horror or nostalgia the Monster Squad is sure to be a perfect addition to your DVD collection.

The 20th anniversary special edition set is reported to contain 2 audio commentary tracks, deleted scenes, an making of featurette, trailers, as well as a vintage interview with Tom Noonan (who played the Frankenstein’s monster.)

This is a great scary movie for kids and adults alike…
This little-known GEM of a film & one of my favorites with mostly a cast of unknowns. Stephen Macht (Graveyard Shift& many other stephen King films) & Jason Hervey (older brother, Wayne on Wonder Years) are familiar faces. A great kids frightfest that has the Creature From The Black Lagoon, Mummy, Wolfman, Frankenstein & a really hot & sexy Dracula with his female coven!

A passel of oddball kids fight the dark forces of evil in their small neighborhood with the help of Frankenstein & Scary German Guy (an old Germanic man that is a neighbor). Great plot, cool special effects, some excellent one liners & some wonderful child acting all make for a terrifc family frightfest! Check out the teacher in the beginning of the movie. The kids call her “Meow Mix” because her head is shaped like a cat’s head! Great oddball writing in this movie makes it scary & funny!

Wonderful story! I just can’t wait for this to come out on DVD!

Some operas live charmed lives both on DVD and CD. This is one of them. We have the Met/Pavarotti-Battle DVD and the Scotto-Bergonzi DVD. We also have several great casts on just CD and almost everyone of them presents an accurate presentation of what the composer asks for. This is not as easy as it sounds. Many Traviatas fall short of our expectations; just to name one opera that gets over recorded and not always well. Now let me be honest and say I don’t always enjoy or get into much comic opera; Don Giovanni being an exception. It’s really a comedy, tragedy and old fashioned morality play all rolled into one. Absurd plots and many farces just don’t cut it with me. I took a risk on this DVD just to see and hear Netrebko and Villazon. I am not disappointed! This entire cast and production do Donizetti and this opera full justice. Netrebko is enchanting. Villazon is unique and special. He’s almost Groucho Marx with a great voice. His entire face and body is an actor’s dream come true and he can sing while being so physically flexible. His voice strikes my ear as having a little bit of Domingo and DiStefano in it. The aria “Una Furtiva Lagrima” has to be encored and is even slightly better the second time. After all his comic posturing his straight forward singing here is just a perfect contrast to all that came before. This DVD should be added to the Battle/Pavarotti and Scotto/Bergonzi if you already own them. Like I said I’m not the biggest fan of comic opera; yet, this production completely won me over. This is an enchanting evening for eye and ear with some glorious melodies by Donizetti. ENJOY!!!

Donizetti’s enchanting comedy ‘L’Elisir d’Amore’ has rarely been performed with such panache and sense of fun as this beautiful evening captured during a live performance of the Otto Schenk/Jürgen Roseat production at the Vienna Staatsoper on this sparkling DVD.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Donizetti – L’Elisir d’Amore / Eschwe, Netrebko, Villazon, Wiener Staatsoper! Click Here

Conductor Alfred Eschwé enjoys every minute of this bubbling score and the orchestra is especially sensitive to his subtle demands. The raison d’etre for creating this live recording is obviously the inimitable harmony of the leads Rolando Villazón as Nemorino and Anna Netrebko as Adina. These two handsome and talented singer/actors share a magnetism that is gracing the opera houses around the world and having seen them before only in dramatic roles on stage, it is rewarding to find they both share a flair for comedy, not only in their interaction with each other but also in their total professionalism of sharing the sense of ensemble. They are a dream match.

It is difficult to imagine a more tenderly sung ‘Una furtiva lacrima’ (and here the audience obviously agrees, demanding an encore!) than Villazón offers. But that is one of the highlights everyone expects. It is the manner of delivery of the entire opera that makes the Villazón/Netrebko duo work such magic. They are ably supported by the Dulcamara of Ildebrando D’Arcangelo and the Sergeant Belcore of the dependable Leo Nucci. Sets, costumes, acting, orchestral timbre and of course gorgeous singing make this an opera DVD well worth owning. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, April 07

Little Joe (Larry the Cucumber), is his father’s favorite son. When his brothers (the French peas) sell him into slavery in Dodge Ball City, he goes to work for McPotiphar. But just when he’s made employee of the month, Miss Kitty (Madame Blueberry) frames him for stealing. Is God really still with him? What could God’s plan possibly be?

Of course, anyone familiar with the Bible will recognize this as the story of Joseph from the Old Testament. Told in a completely fresh way, the theme of God working all things for good for those who follow Him comes through as loud and clear as it does in the original. Of course, the guys at Big Idea have had their own fun with it along the way, and the result is another episode filled with humor for the entire family. We even go back to the kitchen sink and get to see Cordy the Computer again.

A special mention must be made of the new silly song. “Belly Button,” as sung by boy band “Boyz in the Sink” is one of the best they’ve come up with in a while. I dare you not to laugh (and have it stuck in your head for the next few days.)

Big Idea continues to fill their DVD releases with fun bonus activities for the kids and interesting behind the scenes stuff for adults. There’s nothing unusual here if you’ve seen their other releases, but that’s not a bad thing by any stretch.

This DVD is a return to the fun of some of the earlier Bible stories done Veggie style. I enjoyed every minute of it and bet any Veggie fan will, too.

THE BALLAD OF LITTLE JOE is the Veggie Tale version of the Biblical story of Joseph. Bob and Larry try to explain why so many bad things happen to good people. Bob wants a straight Bible story and Larry wants a western. They compromise and THE BALLAD OF LITTLE JOE is the result. The film contains all the great humor and heart that have made Veggie Tales so special and popular. This episode includes the Silly Song of “Belly Button” sung by the In the Sink Boys. The song is hilarious and reminds one of the famous “Hamburger” song from a few years ago. Perhaps Mr. Lunt should sing more love longs. This is a great Veggie Tale episode and the DVD is a welcome addition for any collection. Kids love the Veggie Tales and so do adults. The episodes are made for kids, but adults will perhaps enjoy them even more. The DVD includes a commetary, several previews, a few games, and a few other bonus items.

This is a sweeping statement, but true nonetheless: I believe that Kenneth Branagh’s HENRY V is the greatest screen adaption ever done of Shakespeare. Period. Better than Olivier (although he was great in a very diferent way). Better than any version of Hamlet (even Branagh’s, which is the best of the Hamlets). Better than anything else.

Why do I say this? Simply because no other film adaptation of Shakespeare has captured the essence of what the Bard was trying to say while adding a modern perspective in the process, all in a manner that is readily accessible to a mass audience. Yet that is precisely what this film does.

By sheer genius, Branagh was able to present HENRY V in all of its nationalistic glory, just as Shakespeare wrote it, while at the same time adding an anti-war footnote that serves both as counterpoint and commentary on the Bard’s message. The contrast betwen the St. Crispin’s Day speech as presented here (in which we are made to feel the real power behind Shakespeare’s words) and the gritty, realistic presentation of the battle itself which follows is proof of my assertion.

It’s all here: Lessons on history, loyalty, and the qualities of leadership, all wrapped in a fiercely entertaining package. Branagh’s great accomplishment is to bring the piece to life without the slightest bit of stuffiness or anachronism, and even to add his own touch to an unapproachable masterpiece. This, his first film, remains his crowning achievement. I think the Bard would approve.

This may be the best Shakespeare film ever made. In 1942, Laurence Olivier delivered a jingoistic, stylized wartime production of “Henry V” that nonetheless stood as the standard interpretation. Nearly fifty years later, Kenneth Branagh’s film appeared not only as a powerful and amazingly accessible recasting of the text, but a serious examination of the nature and the costs of the war that was Henry the Fifth’s only real achievement.

Although studded with a fine array of subsidiary characters, “Henry V” is essentially a one-man play, and Branagh’s performance informs and naturally influences all of the rest. His character has most of the lines, and he delivers them with a refreshing naturalism and candor that re-infuses the humor into the funny bits and cuts a lot of the potential for stilted jingoism out of the patriotic and warlike ones. If the real Henry’s delivery of the St. Crispin speech was anything like Branagh’s, it’s no wonder the English won.

Slogging through the mud and rain of Harfleur and Agincourt with Branagh is a masterful supporting cast, including the incomparable Judi Dench as Mistress Quickly, Brian Blessed as a marvelously solid Exeter, and Ian Holm, wonderful as the irreverent and sarcastic Fluellen. On the French side, Paul Scofield’s King is weary and indecisive rather than weak and mad; Michael Maloney’s Dauphin is entertainingly arrogant, and Emma Thompson delivers a small but charming performance in playwright-broken English and much better French than Shakespeare likely spoke. Tying it all together is Christopher Ravenscroft, who invests the herald Mountjoy with a sympathy that extends to both sides, and a phenomenal showing by Derek Jacobi as the earnest, mocking and informative Chorus.

“Henry V” was released and went to video before the heyday of production for DVD, and as such, a “deluxe edition” has not been produced- this disc contains no making-of documentaries, no in-depth interviews with the cast, no online screenplay. But at least in this case, that’s all for the best. The film is stunning enough on its own to need no such accompaniment, and its magic is thereby undiminished.
